The Story of
Berghaus Toni

More than 50 years ago, the Belgian Alpine Club was in search of a welcoming place to stay in the Swiss Alps. The young mountaineer Toni, an experienced ski instructor and passionate lover of the mountains, along with his wife Kati, were running a traditional “Berghaus” – a charming wooden hut perched on the west side of Riederalp. It was here, amidst the stunning alpine scenery, that the Belgian Alpine Club found its home. From that moment on, their annual summer and winter holidays were spent at Toni and Kati’s beloved Berghaus, which would later become known as Hotel Toni. Over the years, a deep friendship blossomed, cementing the foundation of what Berghaus Toni is today.
Toni was not only an exceptional host but also an expert mountaineer, having climbed all the peaks surrounding Riederalp. His knowledge of the local terrain and his love for the mountains became legendary. As an alpine guide and ski instructor, he taught generations of enthusiastic skiers and mountaineers. Toni’s unwavering passion for the Alps and his expertise made him a cherished figure, and his teaching was highly respected, not just by the Belgian Alpine Club, but by all who sought adventure in the mountains.
As the years passed, Berghaus Toni blossomed into a fully-fledged hotel, and the Belgian Alpine Club grew with it. Not only did the club welcome new members, but it also brought along a new generation of ski enthusiasts, many of whom Toni had taught and mentored. His legacy as a teacher and mountaineer was passed down through the generations, with his beloved “Berghaus” remaining the heart of the club’s alpine adventures.
Eventually, Toni felt the time had come to find a successor to continue the traditions of the Berghaus. Today, it is a group of those very ski enthusiasts, who, along with old and new friends, carry on Toni’s legacy, keeping the spirit of the Berghaus alive while breathing new life into it.
Now, James, Brit, and their family, alongside the dedicated Berghaus Toni team, are ready to welcome you with the same warmth, traditions, and values that Toni and Kati established so many years ago. We strive to keep the soul of the mountains alive with the “among friends” atmosphere that Toni was so famous for.
In December 2019, we celebrated a significant milestone: our 10th Anniversary. Our annual Opening Weekend short-ski event entertained a full house, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Berghaus and the strong bonds of friendship it continues to foster.
Come and experience the rich history of Berghaus Toni, where the spirit of adventure, friendship, and the alpine traditions live on.
